Ottonian Art (c.900-1000)
None of the art that was created during this time looked very realistic. At this point, they were so far into abstraction that the concepts they were trying to convey to their viewers were abstract as well, and philosophical in nature. One of the incredibly interesting things about the different artworks of the Ottonian period is the composition, because every part of it is intentional. Because Ottonian artists were trying to convey specific ideas or concepts, each part of their composition played a role in conveying that idea.
