High Renaissance
This period of the Renaissance is probably what most people call to mind when someone mentions the Renaissance, it was during this time that the greats, including: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Raphael Sanzio were around. The talent help by each of these men was unparalleled, and unique. Leonardo da Vinci was known as the ulitmate Renaissance man, and was almost the poster boy of the period. He showed skills in painting, as well as intellect, and strove to express both humanist, and classical values in his art, and research. Michelangelo was known for sculpting, and worked on a large scale. He looked to the human body for inspiration, and embodied the Renaissance ideal of diversity, because while he could create David, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest sculptures of all time, he was also painted the fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, another work known around the world. Raphael was younger than Leonardo and Michelangelo and used that to his advantage because he learned from both of them. The greatest achievement of Raphael is the painting "The School of Athens" which graces the walls of the Vatican and was created during the time Michelangelo was completing his fresco at the Sistine Chapel.
The Renaissance was in full swing, and it gave opportunities to people from every tier of society. Art was a stable and reliable career because, again, everyone wanted a piece of it. Many of the art created during this time portrayed sacred images, as well as domestic scenes of everyday life. Something that the church of the middle ages would not have seen as acceptable.
